Concept for the cold-ironing (HVSC) and district heating/cooling at the cruise Port of Venice
V.T.P. Engineering, a partnership between Venezia Terminal Passeggeri S.p.a. and Abacoingegneria, has developed an innovative solution for supplying ships at berth (HVSC) with a low impact in the environment.
V.T.P. Engineering has analyzed the possible implementation of a ‘Cold Ironing’ system with co-generation for the Port of Venice. Cold Ironing in co-generation can both serve a district-heating plant and supply the ships while creating the following benefits for the city: • It reduces pollution produced by port traffic • It supplies clean energy (both electric and thermal) • It allows for the reduction of urban pollution from heater use.
Thus, in addition to being considered an opportunity for the city’s economic growth, the port also becomes a resource for promoting sustainable development with respect for the environment.
The concept was presented at the Better Practice Exchange in Potsdam (May 30-31, 2011).
